AWESOME projector!!! I'M VERY PLEASED!!

Review Date: November 3, 2009
Reviewer: Carlos, Hampton, VA United States
This technically is my third projector so I am experienced in projectors. My InFocus Screenplay 4805 had reached 3000 hours and the lamp burned out. I was ready to upgrade. At first I bought the Sanyo PLV-1080HD as an open box buy. When I got it home, to my dismay there was over 700 hours on it! BUMMER!! Since I had 30 days to return it, the salesman told me new projectors were on the way and to hold tight. (I would never buy a demo projector again!)

Well two weeks later I saw the Epson in the store. Since I had the Sanyo for 2 weeks, I had something to compare it to. The blacks are twice as good. It is super bright. The colors POP like an LCD TV. Basically it turned my white screen at home into the world largest flat panel. They had a gray screen at the store and the whites were still plenty bright. The screen at the store had glass particles that showed up and were distracting during the movie, so I won't be purchasing a glass particled screen.

Both projectors were much better at my home. The demo room has too much light near the screen. At home, I was a little alarmed by the Epson 8100's oversaturated color right out of the box. The Sanyo was pretty good right out of the box, but the Epson demands adjustment. On HDTV (Cox) most of the people were overly reddish. One of the preset modes for HDTV removed too much color.

I found a review of the projector that included calibration configurations and that made a WORLD of difference. That's when it started to shine even on ECO mode! (I think it could beat Sanyo PLV-1080HD's brightest mode on ECO mode!) I am so excited to have purchased this brand new. I find it a definite upgrade to be able to go 4000 hours on a bulb and only pay $300 for a replacement versus Sanyo's approximate 2000 hours and $400 for a replacement.

Blu-rays were awesome on the Epson 8100. Razor sharp. Even up close to the screen, you can hardly see the porch screen. The contrasts and shadow details were notable.

There are plenty of parameters to adjust this projector. With the warranty, lamp life, and awesome picture. I will definitely be pleased for a long time.

Some reviews went back and forth about organic versus inorganic panels and guess about what kind of panels this projector is made of. The two year warranty give me peace of mind that if the panels go bad, I will get it fixed.

I have used a projector since 2005 and I have used it for TV, movies and some computer use. I do cut it off if I'm not watching but I have fallen asleep a few times. It's on most of Saturday and Sunday. Still in 4 years, I only used the In Focus for 3000 hours.

I had considered having a LCD TV in addition so I could save the bulb, but I can buy a lot of bulbs for that cost and even a 52" TV seems tiny after being accustomed to a 92" screen. I was watching Larry King and the wall behind him was true black. The color was awesome. CNN shines! Sports look GREAT. (Sports were dim on the Sanyo PLV-1080HD.)

My projector is at least 20 feet away and giving off plenty of light even with my lights on. According to one of the reviews, the light is considerably cut when you have it too far away. I have it at the longest distance where you can have it 100" and using ECO lamp with the light off and it's plenty bright.

I have it on a shelf in the back of the room so I can still enjoy my ceiling fan in the summer. The exhaust vent on the front is a life saver on this unit. The Sanyo was blowing hot air and some bright light out the side of their projector. The Sanyo did have a door to hide the lens but Epson has a lens cover. Since I can easily reach the lens, I'll just put the cover on, when I'm finished. I may even purchase a full projector cover for when it's not in use to cut down on dust.

There were overwhelming positive reviews for the Sanyo, but this Epson will blow it away. Even the exterior design in a little more sexy in pearl white and a little bit more stream lined and less boxy.

Finally, don't pay full price as it's a buyer's market. I got an awesome price at a major retailer and for 0% financing, so get yours today! Get this projector!
I would recommend it highly

Reviewer: Stephen D. Doane, Cumberland RI
I bought the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8100 after visiting a friend of a friend, who had an older Epson HD projector set up, and it blew me away. I had thought of getting a projector in years past, but never did due to what I thought was very expensive to own (lamp $$ and replacments), initial purchase, and screen purchase. I found that the bulb is rated at 4000 hours, that's like 3 years at 4 hours of watching the projector every nite! I bought the projector, and was BLOWN AWAY to see the picture in HD on my regular painted light brown wall with no screen yet. The picture was so bright, so clear, I was not going to pay $750 for a 120 inch permanent screen like my friend of a friend did. I did a test to hold a sheet on the wall and project half on the sheet and half on the wall - to my surprise, the colors (skin tones too) were perfect whether on the brown wall or white sheet, and perfectly acceptable to my surprise. I later found a Da-Lite screen for $99 (72INX96IN Model B Manual Pull Down Screen Matte White by Da-Lite) on Amazon free shipping no tax to my door, which adds about 20% brightness and a little more contrast to finish off the purchase. I use the projector with HDMI HD cable box out for TV, HDMI blu ray player, Component for HD xbox 360 (yes xbox is HD 1080 even using component cables), and use the VGA input with a PC and a 50 foot VGA cable to a VGA repeater, so my home PC in the other room can show on the projector if I want it to. Projector is awesome and I recommend it highly. Aside from no one being disappointed with this picture quality, the next biggest feature is the "throw" of the lens. Meaning, most people can't put the projector in the middle of the room on a stand in the way of your furniture. They usually ceiling mount it. If you have high ceilings like I do (8 feet) and want the projector as much out of the way as I do (almost touching the ceiling) rather than have to aim the projector on an angle towards the middle of your wall, the lens has an adjustment to drop the entire rectangular image DOWN very low and sizable left or right of the projectors face. This means it will install in more places than many other projectors. I just hope the lamp life will live up to expectations, and not die out or considerably dim to half at half life, etc. I can't find anyone who has yet changed their bulb once or twice to comment if it stays relatively bright until it dies or dims a little every 1000 hours, we'll see - but you CANNOT be dissapointed by this projector AT THIS PRICE. If you have another grand, that's different, but for around $1500 this one is the one. Couple that with 90 day advance replacement warranty from Epson, and 2 years parts and labor from Epson direct (projector comes with your own PIN for fast tech support) you will love this one!

Review Date: September 26, 2005
Reviewer: M. Allen, Seattle, Wa United States
I recently decided to upgrade from my 42" inch HDTV Samsung to the Optoma Movie Time Projector, and I have to tell you I am a changed man. The clarity and size of the image is amazing, no distortion at all. The picture is as good if not better than my 42" incher. Unreal! After getting the projector I displayed the image on my wall since I hadn't received the screen, I put Siderman in the DVD player and even on the wall the picture was perfect. After getting the 9 or 10 foot wide screen the following day the picture was even better, I was amazed considering the screen is dark grey in color. I now have the best of both worlds, a projector that produces 9 foot wide movies in pure digitial, and a 42 incher in the corner of the same room. Picture in Picture the old way!
As to the rainbow affect that you hear of with DLP, well I haven't experienced it yet and neither have my friends that I invited over a couple of days later. We played XBOX, PS2 and watched movies for about 8 hours, crazy. My wife wasn't to happy about some 30 year old men jumping around like kids all day but even she was impressed with the crisp images produced. A definite buy for anyone looking to upgrade to an entertainment heaven, a movie theatre within your house.
Great Projector

Review Date: September 1, 2005
Reviewer: R. Eng, Centreville, VA
Regarding the previous negative review, I would be pissed too if the lamp blew that early on, but that can happen to any projector. Just like any electronics, there can always be a dud. I understand their frustration, but this is a 1st class projector.

The lamp life is actually 3000 hrs in economode, and the projector is extremely bright for watching DVDs in this mode even on a 110 inch screen. The lamp life is probably rated a little bit longer than the average projector.

A positive for indoor viewing, is this projector has a very short throw which is great for smaller rooms with big screens. A negative is it would be difficult to ceiling mount, so this is really just a coffee table or floor projector. But it's primary function is portability.

The portability and "Wow" factor for showing movies outdoors is great. Imagine your neighbors faces when you have a 7 ft wide movie on the side of your house. The built in speakers are suprisingly good for their size. This is a great projector for taking on a vacation where you have lots of downtime to catch up on movies.

Another major plus, is the built in DVD player allows for a digital to digital display of the video which would require an HDMI or DVI connection on an ordinary projector. So no need to spend $50-$100 on a cable.

Compared to many higher end business projectors, the contrast is quite good and brightness is great. For the money this projector is a bargain, especially if the DVD player holds up for a few years.

It even comes with a nice carrying case and decent remote.

First impression is 5 stars.
`REEL` HOME CINEMA

Review Date: November 28, 2005
Reviewer: Robert C. Graham, OGMORE BY SEA, VALE OF GLAMORGAN United Kingdom
Within 10 minutes of opening the box I had a 10 feet perfect image of `Shrek` projected.

This is a beautiful projector with fantastic image clarity and colour saturation. Movies were made for large screen presentation and films like Polar Express, Bridge on the River Kwai, Sound of Music, Great Excape, Titanic lose impact when shown on television.

The Movietime has a native format of 16:9 which is ideal for most movies and HDTV. Of course many films have different formats like 235:1, 240:1 and 255:1 (King and I) and the classics movies were mostly shot in almost square 4:3.

The DV10 handles them all fantastically. You can watch any format in 16:9 and it will scale the picture to fit. If you want to see the movie in its theatrical ratio you can switch it whilst in play in a second.

This is a very easy to use projector with a superb visible menu which takes only minutes to master.

The picture is superb out of the box and it does exactly what it claims to do.

Where can you see a large 35mm quality cinema like projection of films like Casablanca these days. At last the Marx Bros, Laurel and Hardy or Buster Keaton `come to life` again.

Wide screen epics like Ben Hur, Braveheart of Spartacus (I have a 65mm transfer which is no less than spectacular on this machine).

With ImageAI or Cinema Mode it seems to analyse the image as it plays to give the most fantastic picture. This projector really loves movies!

Using the DLP system (which tends to be the best for movies) the picture quality is astounding meaning that a 10` wide movie can be watched at a much closer range which really immerses the viewer. Obviously different machines, but DLP is the type of projector being installed in digital theatres now.

Even the two stereo speakers pack a good enough punch but for the true cinema sound experience hook it up to a surround sound system.

In order to produce such an image the lamp is hot and has a small odour as any projector would (even film)which personally, I did not notice. There is an O2 filter which deals with that and you will not even notice the cooling fan.

Overall I have nothing but praise for this machine. It is an excellent value, superb quality DVD projector - in fact so good it will soon pay for itself as I will hardly be visiting the local multiplex any more!

UPDATE 12/12/2005

Now a couple of weeks has passed and the projector has been in use everyday it has handled every kind of movie I have thrown at it magnificently.

Because the projector is matched to the onboard DVD player digitally each pixel is matched. Using best quality DVD transfers the quality appears equal to film and in some cases like Disney`s restored Snow White it is better. The colours explode off the screen.

Optoma recommends their Panoview Greywolf 92" diagonal screen which is an easily wall or ceiling mounted and gives an excellent picture.

For special screening I use a Harkness Hall (screen manufacturers since the advent of sound films) matt white which is around 136" diagonal and the picture quality/contrast and colours are literally stunning.

Watching Polar Express was almost like a roller coaster.

One final point about the lamp `smell`. This is as another reviewer stated because it is a new lamp. The odour (which is not poisenous) goes after a few hours use.

I have not listed any bad points as I have not found any.

FINAL UPDATE 20.12.2005
I can only comment that for those who have encountered any problems with this may have a bad unit. A good test has been `Steamboat Bill Jnr` with Buster Keaton using a good transfer to DVD of an almost 80 year old film.

The Image AI works wonders on these classic films compared to television. Whilst the transfer is excellent on TV it is enhanced on this machine. For instance in this film when Buster sends a telegram to his father stating he is visiting some fo the words are not visible on a tv set, however when projected in its theatrical 4:3 mode the whole telegram can be read. In other scenes more image is visible than on any TV.

I have projected a 64 square feet image of `It`s a wonderful life` which looks stunning.

I rest my case
IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

It is now February 5th 2007 and the projector still performs as new. I am still on the first lamp and it has never disappointed in any respect. It is so easy to use that we take it with us when we are staying away as even projected on a it wall gives a much more exciting and larger picture than even a plasma tv. Being a film fanatic and collector also of 16mm film prints I am very fussy about getting the best images on screen. Would I buy another Optoma model? Absolutely!

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description If you're in the market for a cost-effective digital projector that can shine during your workdays for presentations or classroom use and moonlight on weekends as part of your home theater experience, you'll want to take a close look at the InFocus X2 Multimedia DLP Projector. Featuring a 4:3 format DLP chip in 800 x 600 resolution, a four-segment, 2x speed color wheel, and a manual zoom and focus with a 1.2x magnification, this multipurpose projector can give you a bright, 100-inch diagonal 4:3 image in a range of about 12 to 15 feet.

The Infocus X2 is perfect for the classroom or workplace, as well as any home theater. View larger.
DLP Technology: Superb Imaging and Convenience
The X2 relies on DLP, or digital imaging, technology from Texas Instruments. DLP is entirely digital, which means that you'll never experience image degradation or "yellowing"--better known as color decay--that other imaging technologies experience over time. Projectors based on DLP technology are fully compatible with digital signals--with no analog conversion necessary--making them compatible with everything from digital cameras to gaming consoles. The Digital Micromirror Device that forms the heart of DLP technology is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, giving DLP the advantage of being extremely portable for a wide range of uses.

Features an intuitive keypad on the top of the project for easy navigation. View larger.

Connection panel is located at the rear of the unit. A detailed rear view or view larger.
The X2 provides a stunning 2000:1 contrast ration that offers superb imaging for home video or gaming. The projector's ANSI lumen output is rated at 1600 at full-power and 1100 in low-lamp--and, therefore, lower fan noise--mode. The projector's 200-watt lamp fills your screen brilliantly with 1700 lumens, and in low-power mode it will give you an amazing 3,000 hours of use. The X2 features a maximum projection of 32.3 feet, with at least five feet needed on the lower end. The projector's zoom lens means that images will fit the screen perfectly from wherever the projector is located.

Unlike many other digital projectors that practically require a technical degree to operate them, the InFocus X2 is designed for easy connectivity and use. The connection panel is located conveniently at the rear of the unit. Inputs include one M1-DA port that takes computer RGB, DVI, and HDTV; one S-video port; and one composite video jack. In addition there is one set of stereo RCA audio inputs. The connections are color-coded, making a laptop, PDA, DVD, cable or satellite TV system, digital camera, or game console connection as easy as it gets, no matter where you are.

Convenient, Easy-to-Use Features
The InFocus interface features intuitive keypads, remote controls, and user-friendly menus that deliver one-touch operation. The projector is compatible with DVI, HDTV 1080i, 720p, 480p, and computer resolutions up to XGA (1024x768). With it, you can project NTSC, PAL, or SECAM standard videos from the rear or front. At just 9.8 by 12.9 by 4.2 inches (W by L by H) and 6.8 pounds, the X2 is portable enough to bring home from the office whenever you're ready to kick back to some brilliant video or exciting gaming. And with a built-in 2.5 watt speaker, you won't need to drag extra speakers with you for you presentations.

In short, the InFocus X2 is a multipurpose workhorse that's designed to pull double duty, giving you low-cost, easy-to-use functionality at work, and brilliant imaging for your home theater and gaming needs.
